Pracaxi Oil - Pracachy Oil - (Pentaclethra macroloba)

Chica's favorite oil and her business inspiration.

I was wondering around a city in the middle of the Amazonia forest back in 2002, when an old lady selling oils, herbs and other natural medicine on a local street market looked at my face that at the time had dark spots around the cheeks and forehead and made me buy this one oil I had never heard about before. The prescription creams I was using were making my skin too thin and causing other problems so I committed to this weird sounding oil. Pracaxi saved my face, it took a while but it worked. It is a dry oil, easy to use and it works!

This species is distributed throughout northern Brazil, Guyana, Trinidad, and some regions of Central America. The tree is medium in size (8–14 m), found in flooded areas, and forms half-moon shaped fruit pods, 20 to 25 cm long, containing 4 to 8 seeds. Approximately 35 fruits are needed to obtain one kilo of seeds, which contain approximately 30% oil (when the seeds are dry).

The inhabitants of the Amazon region use the bark to combat the effects of poison from snake and scorpion bites. The seeds are collected (along rivers, streams, and beaches), dried in the sun, and stored for selling. The oil is used by river people for hair, skin care and for its  insecticidal ability.

*The Amazonian butters and oils have been tested by generations of rainforest's indigenous and ribeirinho people. They are used for cooking, baking, healing, moisturizing and protecting against the elements.

When we consume Amazonia's sustainable, non-timber-products, we give the local people an alternative to logging and farming which are the two largest responsible factors of the deforestation of such an important ecosystem.

Rainforest Chica's products are wild harvested or ethically farmed. With constant focus on sustainability and fair treatment of harvester, farmers, transporters and producers.
