Brazilian Bentonite and Zeolite Clays - Organic

$ 4.85

I am so excited to be selling two new clay types! All from Brazil, fair trade and ethically sourced.

Both bentonite clay and zeolite are valuable ingredients for detoxification and cleansing in cosmetic products. The choice between them (or using them in combination, as is sometimes the case) often depends on the specific product goals and the intended skin type.

  • Bentonite clay is often favored for its strong oil-absorbing and general purifying properties, making it excellent for oily and acne-prone skin.

  • Zeolite is often chosen for its ability to target and trap a broader range of toxins and its antioxidant benefits, making it suitable for a wider range of skin types, including those concerned about environmental pollutants and skin aging.

Bentonite Clay:

  • Mechanism: It works primarily through absorption, meaning it draws impurities, excess oil (sebum), and toxins into its structure like a sponge. It also has a high cation exchange capacity, attracting positively charged ions like some toxins and minerals.

  • Benefits for Skin:

    • Detoxification: Effectively draws out impurities, dirt, and pollutants from the skin's surface and pores.

    • Oil Control: Its absorbent properties make it beneficial for oily and acne-prone skin by soaking up excess sebum.

    • Pore Cleansing: Helps to unclog pores, potentially reducing the appearance of blackheads and whiteheads.

    • Anti-inflammatory and Antibacterial: May help to calm inflamed breakouts and has some antibacterial properties.

    • Skin Healing: Rich in minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron, which can nourish the skin and support its natural healing processes. It has been used to treat skin irritations like poison ivy rashes and diaper rash.

  • Cosmetic Uses: Commonly found in face masks, cleansers, body wraps, soaps, and some mineral makeup. It provides a smooth "slip" in products like shaving soaps.

  • Considerations: Can be drying, especially for those with dry or sensitive skin. It's recommended to use it in moderation and perform a patch test first. Avoid using with drying acids or retinol.

Zeolite:

  • Mechanism: Primarily works through adsorption, trapping molecules (like toxins and heavy metals) within its porous structure. It also has a high ion exchange capacity, allowing it to exchange cations with its surroundings.

  • Benefits for Skin:

    • Detoxification: Effectively traps toxins, heavy metals, and pollutants at a molecular level.

    • Antioxidant: Can neutralize free radicals, protecting the skin from environmental stressors and potentially reducing signs of aging.

    • Cleansing and Exfoliation: Its porous structure can help to gently exfoliate dead skin cells and remove impurities, leaving the skin feeling clean and smooth.

    • Odor Control: Used in deodorants for its ability to absorb and neutralize odors.

    • May Support Skin Health: Some studies suggest it can help with skin regeneration and may be beneficial for certain skin conditions.

  • Cosmetic Uses: Found in face masks, cleansers, exfoliating products, deodorants, and even some sunscreens. It can boost the detoxifying abilities of other clays when used in combination.

  • Considerations: Generally considered safe for topical use in recommended concentrations. However, individuals with highly sensitive skin should perform a patch test.

They are sold in sealed and re-sealed pouches, the most environmentally friendly option I have found.
